A long, broad beach past Maho at the very end of the North Shore Road. It stays relatively quiet even in high season, with a National Park bird-watching pond behind it and some of the most reliable sunsets on the island.
What makes Francis Bay special
Francis Bay is the North Shore’s calm, spread-out beach. Because it sits at the far end of the road past Maho, day-trippers and cruise crowds thin out by the time they reach it. The beach is long and wide, so even on a busy day you can find your own stretch of sand.
The water is calm and shallow — good for easy swimming and floating rather than big-wave action. Snorkeling is decent along the rocky edges, though Francis is better known for its sunsets and birds than for reef.
Behind the beach, the Francis Bay Trail loops around a salt pond that’s one of the National Park’s prime bird-watching spots — herons, egrets, ducks, and migratory shorebirds, best in the early morning. It’s a flat, easy walk if you want more than just beach time.

Park rules, fees and getting there
Park rules: No amplified music is allowed on any Virgin Islands National Park beach. Reef-safe sunscreen is required (chemical SPF is banned in the USVI). Federally protected wildlife — sea turtles, rays, birds — cannot be touched, fed, or chased; stay at least 10 feet away.

Getting there: Francis Bay is at the end of the North Shore Road past Maho Bay — about 28 minutes from Cruz Bay. There’s a parking area, but the drive is long and winding. We drop you at the beach and pick you up at a scheduled time so you don’t have to navigate the North Shore Road yourself.
